Spotlight On The Boston Terrier

Did you know that the Boston Terrier was formerly one of the most beloved breeds in the country? Fido remains popular in his home state of Massachusetts, but he has fallen down the rankings in other locations. In 2023, the charming pup was ranked as the 23rd most popular breed out of the 200 officially recognized by the AKC. That ranking will not earn Fido any trophies, but it’s not too bad either. There are plenty of reasons to adore this cute little pup! A local Plano, TX veterinarian discusses these charming dogs below.

Basics Of The Boston Terrier Breed

The Boston Terrier is a robust, stocky, and absolutely attractive dog. He wears sleek fur in a beautiful tuxedo pattern that can be black, brindle, or seal against white. Fido has a square head, pointed ears, and an adorable, expressive face. Boston Terriers frequently have expressive eyes, which just adds to their allure.

Boston Terriers often stand between 15 and 17 inches tall at the shoulder. They usually live between 11 and 13 years. In terms of weight, the breed standard classifies the pups into three groups. The first is for dogs weighing under 15 pounds. The second category is for dogs aged 15 to 20, and the third is for puppies aged 20 and up. Fido’s weight, however, should not exceed 25 pounds.

What Is Boston Terrier’s Breed History?

We can determine the lineage of most breeds using historical records and/or DNA. The Boston Terrier’s history can be pinpointed to a very specific time and place: The Burnett House in Southborough, Massachusetts. The mansion was constructed in 1847 for scientist Joseph Burnett, who made his fortune on vanilla extract. In the 1860s, Joseph’s son Edward crossed Burnett’s Gyp, a white bulldog, with Hooper’s Judge, a darker dog assumed to be a mix between the English Bulldog and the now-extinct White English Terrier. Though the two canines only had one puppy, that little dog, Eph, was the forefather of the handsome Boston Terrier.

In the late 1800s, the new breed gained popularity in Boston’s Beacon Hill neighborhood, captivating not only socialites but also the coachmen who worked for them. Fido was officially accepted into the AKC’s non-sporting division in 1893. The breed now has its own day, which is honored every February.

Are Boston Terriers Generally Healthy?

Though Fido is normally rather robust, there are a few health concerns that owners should be aware of. One source of concern is vision issues. There are some risks associated with those beautiful bug eyes. Because of their prominence, they are vulnerable to injury. Fido’s eyes should be checked for redness or inflammation on a daily basis. You should also have your canine companion checked for common eye issues, such as cataracts, corneal ulcers, and glaucoma.

Another noteworthy distinction is that Boston Terriers have brachycephalic heads. The short, flat faces are adorable, but they come at a cost. Brachys can rapidly lose their breath. They can easily overheat in hot temperatures and run out of air when exerted. They are also vulnerable to heart failure. Hip dysplasia, as well as allergies, are common.

Patella evaluation, ophthalmologist evaluation, and BAER testing are all recommended by the national breed club. You will also need to take your canine friend  to the vet on a regular basis for exams and wellness treatment.

How Much Exercise Should Boston Terriers Get?

This depends on the puppy. Some Boston Terriers do well with only a few daily walks. Others just want to run around, play, and have fun. (Hint: A lot of these guys enjoy playing Fetch.) Some like dog sports, such as agility, obedience, and flyball. However, you must exercise caution and avoid going overboard. Ask your vet for advice.

Do Boston Terriers Require A lot of Grooming?

When it comes to grooming, these fashion-forward dogs are rather simple to care for. Brush Fido once a week to remove dead fur and help his natural oils circulate. You won’t have to bathe your canine companion too frequently, though. You must cut your puppy’s claws on a regular basis. Visit your animal clinic regularly, and get some great advice on your cute pet’s diet and care needs.

What Is the Boston Terrier’s Character Like?

Because the Boston Terrier is from one of America’s largest and oldest cities, it’s only natural that these pups would be amiable. Well-mannered and friendly, Fido is the perfect pup to take to a park or cafe, and he usually doesn’t waste time winning people over. They also tend to be great with kids and usually get on well with other pets.

That said, training and socialization are key. Fido is very emotional, and can get quite upset if rebuked sternly. Opt for positive reinforcement, and focus on rewarding good behavior.

Be sure to ask your Allen, TX vet for more information.

Does The Boston Terrier Have A Nickname?

Fido used to be called a Roundhead, which is rather ironic as the breed actually has a square head shape. The pups have also been referred to as ‘American Gentleman’ due to their formal dress and pleasant mannerisms.

What Famous People Have Owned Boston Terriers?

Quite a few celebrities have had Boston Terriers. Helen Keller is one of the most well-known Boston Terrier fans. Her pooch, Sir Thomas, or “Phiz” for short, often accompanied her to Radcliffe College.

Are There Any Famous Boston Terriers?

The most renowned Boston Terrier is most likely Sergeant Stubby, who earned the honor of being called the most decorated war dog of World War I. The pooch traveled to France with the 26th (Yankee) Division, and earned recognition through rather astounding acts of bravery. Over the course of his service, he saved his comrades from mustard gas, comforted the wounded, and even caught a German by the seat of his pants, detaining his prisoner until Americans arrived. He earned a gold medal, a wound strip, and two purple hearts. There’s even an animated movie about him: the 2018 film Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero.
