6 Ways to Celebrate Shelter Dog Birthdays

Did you adopt your dog from a shelter? If so, today is a big day for Fido: it’s his birthday! August 1st has been designated as Dogust, the official birthday for shelter dogs. This is definitely an event worth celebrating! Read on as a Frisco, TX vet offers some suggestions on how to get that furry tail going on this special occasion.

Mechanical Ball Launcher

Is chasing tennis balls is Fido’s favorite thing ever? Get him a mechanical ball launcher! This is a great way to keep your canine buddy active and amused. (Note, because tennis balls can be choking hazards for really big dogs, we don’t recommend this for large breeds.)

Photo Shoot

Take a few minutes to capture some cute pictures of your four-legged friend. Candid shots are great, especially now that smartphones have such excellent cameras. If you want to go the extra mile, download a pet camera app. These have special features, like sound effects to get Fido’s attention, that make it easy to get great shots.

Snacks

Nothing will get that cute tail going like a special treat. Store-bought treats are fine, but Fido can also enjoy some shredded deli meat; cooked, boneless meat, chicken, or fish; a hot dog; a few pieces of bacon or sausage; or a little cheese. You can also offer your pup some doggy ice cream. Just don’t go overboard with fatty snacks.

Explore

Many dogs love checking out new places. If your furry buddy loves exploring, take him to a new park, or try a trail you haven’t visited before. You can also treat Fido with a trip to a pet store or a dog-friendly café.

Presents

Fido definitely deserves a few birthday gifts! Toys are always great options for doggy presents. You can also get your pooch a new bed, or perhaps a new leash or harness. If you really want to go all-out, get your canine friend a doghouse or a kiddie pool to splash around in.

Time

The best way to make Fido happy is to simply spend some time with him. Take your pup for a long walk, and then indulge him with a fun play session. This is a great way to end a long day!
