Local Pests That Can Endanger Your Pet

April 1, 2021
Spring is here! We don’t usually have to worry about mud season or melting snow around here. However, as summer approaches, it is important to know which critters can endanger your beloved pet. A Frisco, TX vet lists some dangerous local pests below.

Snakes

Many snakes are very active at this time of year. While you can’t entirely snake-proof your property, you can make it less hospitable. Use mesh or screens over drain pipes, and put up four-foot fences. We also recommend filling in holes under sheds and doghouses. When walking your canine buddy, pay close attention to the terrain, especially at night. If you’re in an area with a lot of snakes, ask your vet about getting Fido the rattlesnake vaccine.

Rodents

These uninvited guests can bring a whole slew of diseases. They also carry fleas and ticks, which makes them even more dangerous. Be sure to keep food stored in containers that can’t be easily opened or chewed through. We also recommend keeping meals to designated areas. This reduces the chances of crumbs being dropped in other spots. You’ll also want to seal off openings that critters could get through. It’s probably worth mention that cats can be great at keeping mice away. However, don’t just rely on Fluffy. If you see signs of rat or mouse infestations, call a pest-control company. Opt for one that uses humane, pet-safe methods.

Fleas

Fleas can not only make pets terribly itchy: they can also cause a variety of health issues, such as dermatitis. These tiny bloodsuckers can transmit other parasites, such as tapeworms. Severe infestations can also cause anemia, which can be life-threatening, especially in puppies. Keep up with  your furry friend’s preventative care! There are also things you can do to make your property less hospitable to fleas. Mow your yard regularly, and trim back shrubs around your house.

Ticks

Fleas are bad enough, but ticks are even more dangerous, as they can carry dangerous diseases, such as Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. As with fleas, keeping up with Fido’s preventative care is your best defense. We also recommend checking your canine buddy daily. This is particularly important if you live near or frequent fields and wooded areas. Is your dog or cat due for an exam or parasite control?
