Thanksgiving is coming up fast. Your feline buddy will no doubt spend much of her holiday supervising preparations for the big feast. Read on as a local Plano, TX vet discusses spending Halloween with kitties.

Food

Fluffy will definitely be paying close attention as that delicious turkey comes out of the oven! Your kitty deserves a special holiday treat! Offer your furball a can of plain tuna or chicken in water, sodium-free broth, or some shredded deli meat. Your feline buddy can also have some of that delicious turkey. Just be sure to remove the skin, bones, and fat first. Never give your cat anything that contains garlic, onion, scallions, or chives; alcohol; caffeine; grapes, currants, or raisins; chocolate; nuts; pitted fruits; or xylitol. Meat on the bone is also unsafe, as are dairy milk and raw meat, dough, or yeast. Ask your vet for more information.

Guests

Cats all have their own unique purrsonalities. Some kitties will spend the day hopping from lap to lap. Others will retreat to their favorite hiding spot, and won’t emerge until the last visitor is gone. If you have a scaredy-cat on your hands, put your timid pet in a quiet back room with food, toys, a litterbox, and comfy bedding, and let her sleep through the holiday.

Preparation

You may want to do some fur removal before your guests arrive. Vacuum and dust your home thoroughly, and change your air filters. You can use a squeegee, damp sponge, or rubber dish gloves to get fur off your furniture. It’s also a good idea to brush your feline pal. The more hair you get with a brush, the less that will end up stuck to your furniture! Last but not least, remember to change the litterbox.

Decorations

As you may have noticed, cats are extremely frisky, especially when they are little. Keep your furball in mind as you are decorating. Wreaths and garlands can both entangle or choke playful pets. Candles and potpourri burners are also unsafe. Keep these things well out of reach of those cute paws!
