Senior Cat Care

March 1, 2016
Did you know that cats enter their golden years around age seven? While Fluffy may always be a kitten at heart, she will slow down as she grows older, and her needs will change a bit. Below, a Plano, TX veterinarian offers tips on caring for your aging cat.

Diet

Make sure your feline buddy is eating a good, nutritious diet, and give her the best pet food you can afford. Be careful not to overfeed your furball, though: if Fluffy becomes obese, she faces several serious health risks! Ask your vet for specific recommendations, including portion sizes, suitable treats, and advice on switching your kitty to a senior-formula pet food.

Grooming

Fluffy may have trouble reaching her entire body to groom herself as she ages. Give her a helping hand by gently brushing her.

Playtime

Did you know that playing is very beneficial for kitties? Spend a few minutes each day holding a laser pointer or wand toy for Fluffy to pounce on and chase. The physical activity and mental stimulation cats get from regular play sessions will be great for her!

Litterbox

Senior cats often prefer litterboxes with low sides. If your home has more than one story, keep extra litterboxes on each floor, so your feline friend doesn’t have to use the stairs as often.

Senior Facilities

To keep your senior kitty happy, comfy, and purring, make sure she has lots of cozy napping spots to snuggle up in. Pet ramps or stairs can help your furball climb onto beds and sofas. You may also want to leave a nightlight on to help Fluffy get around after dark.

Veterinary Care

As your furry friend ages, she may need to see the vet more often, so she can be monitored for any signs of potential health problems. In between visits, keep up on your kitty’s parasite control, and watch for any possible symptoms of illness. If you notice anything unusual about Fluffy’s appetite, appearance, vocalizations, or behavior, contact your vet immediately.

TLC

Of course, the best thing you can do for your kitty is to pay attention to her. Talk to Fluffy, play with her, and pet her. She’ll feel loved and safe, and will reward you with purrs and kitty cuddles, which are both precious gifts in our book! Does your pet need veterinary care?
