Summer Dog Care Tips

August 15, 2018
As you may have noticed, Texas summers can be scorchers. Now, with the dog days of summer right around the corner, we’re into the hottest part of the year. Hot weather can be very dangerous for Man’s Best Friend! You’ll want to take some precautions to keep your furry buddy happy, healthy and safe in hot weather. Read on as a local Plano, TX vet lists some summer dog care tips.

Water

The most important summer dog care tip is also the easiest: make sure Fido always has plenty of fresh water. If you often find your dog’s bowl dry, you may need to get him a bigger one. You can also set out multiple water stations. Wash your canine friend’s bowls daily, so grime and bacteria don’t build up. On hot days, drop a few ice cubes into your furry pal’s bowl.

Paw Care

Doggy paw pads are very delicate. Fido can burn his furry feet by walking or playing on hot surfaces, such as tar and asphalt. Try to keep your four-legged friend on soft grass as much as you can, and use paw balm or wax to protect his feet.

Heat

Fido can overheat very quickly on those scorching summer days. Take care not to overexert your pup when it’s really hot out. Limit your dog’s outdoor time during the midday hours, when temperatures are at their peak. Walk and play with your canine friend in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler.

Excursions

Many dogs love to go places with their owners. However, if Fido can’t go inside with you at your destination, he’ll be safer—and more comfortable—staying home. Never ever leave your pet in a locked car or shed. Temperatures can reach deadly levels in just minutes inside a car!

Keeping Fido Cool

Want to score some extra tail wags? Offer your canine buddy a cold snack, like doggy ice cream, which you can find in many pet stores. Fido can also have some chilled sodium-free broth, or cold, cooked meat, fish, or chicken with the bones, skin, or fat removed. If you really want to pamper your pet, look online for homemade doggy treat recipes. Just be sure to stick to ones that use only dog-friendly ingredients.
