Signs That Your Dog Is In Pain

October 1, 2018
Dogs are very smart, and form extremely close bonds with their human pals. Although Fido can’t talk, he’s pretty good at communicating with his human friends, especially when he wants to let us know he’s hungry or ready for a walk! However, it isn’t that easy for your furry pal to let you know he isn’t feeling well. Therefore, it’s important for dog owners to keep a close eye out for warning signs. Read on as a Frisco, TX vet lists some signs that your canine friend may be in pain.

Restlessness

Dogs often get very fidgety when they are sick or hurting. Fido may pace, refuse to sit still, or keep getting up and down.

Lack of Appetite

Man’s Best Friend has a very, very healthy appetite, to say the least. Therefore, it’s always a red flag when a dog doesn’t want to eat. If Fido isn’t interested in his dinner, he could be sick.

Uncharacteristic Behavior

Being sick can put a damper on even the most cheerful pup’s personality. If Fido seems uncharacteristically withdrawn or grumpy, he may not be feeling well. Sometimes the reverse is also true: for instance, a normally-aloof dog that suddenly wants to cuddle may be ill.

Panting

It’s normal for dogs to pant a bit if they’ve been running around or if it’s really hot outside. However, if Fido is panting continuously, and/or when he’s just resting, there could be something going on with him.

Licking/Chewing

Dogs often chew or lick at areas that are sore. If you notice your four-legged friend frequently nibbling at a specific spot, he could be in pain.

Whining

All of our canine pals are unique, with their own personalities. Some dogs whine when the cat steals their bed, or if they see a squirrel in the yard. However, prolonged or uncharacteristic whining or whimpering are red flags.

Shying

Pets often jump, shy, or even growl if you touch a spot that is hurting them. If your canine companion flinches when you touch him, he may be in pain.
