Ways to Make Your Pet Feel Loved

February 20th is Love Your Pet Day! While our animal companions certainly deserve to feel loved every day, this is a great time to score some extra purrs and tail wags. A Plano, TX vet discusses how to make your furry friend feel loved in this article.

Offer Toys and Treats

It doesn’t matter whether you’ve just adopted your animal companion, or if Fluffy or Fido has been with you for years: toys and treats are at the top of this list. Fun playthings and yummy snacks will go a long way toward helping your furry companion feel safe and loved. This is also just an easy way to brighten up your pet’s day, and strengthen the bond between you.

Playtime

You are the center of your pet’s world. Your furry pal depends on you for food, water, and shelter. However, in addition to providing these basics, you also need to pay attention to your pet. Playing is a great way for you to do this. If you have a kitty, get her some toys that allow you to play with her interactively. As for Fido, just spending a few minutes a day tossing a ball for him will help him feel content.

Don’t Force Attention

All of our animal companions are unique. Some are very cuddly and friendly, while others are more reserved. That said, it’s always best to let your dog or cat approach you when they want cuddles, belly rubs, lap time, or ear scritches. Never force attention on your pet: this may just make them feel smothered.

Use Positive Reinforcement

Fido and Fluffy are both adorable, loving, and loyal, but they aren’t purrfect. Cats sometimes scratch inappropriately, for instance. Dogs also have some bad habits, like chewing and digging. However, you should never punish your pet for misbehaving. Pets don’t really understand punishment, especially after the fact. It’s much better to focus on rewarding positive behavior.

Pay Attention

Pets can’t speak up if they are sick or uncomfortable, so it’s important to pay close attention to them. Offer small comforts, like soft beds, and watch for signs of illness. In return for these kindnesses, you’ll be rewarded with love, friendship, and a light dusting of pet fur. What more could you ask for?
