Holistic Pet Care

August 30th is Holistic Pet Care Day! As you may know, here at Coit Hedgcoxe Animal Hospital, we offer both traditional veterinary care and alternative treatments, which includes holistic practices like acupuncture. This allows us to customize treatment options in ways that provide our adorable patients with the best of both worlds. A Plano, TX veterinarian discusses holistic pet care in this article.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient treatment, one which is traditionally based around the manipulation and flow of energy (Qi) through the body. The practice was built on the belief that inserting tiny needles into the body at specific points would help correct and reopen blockages and obstacles to energy flow. Western medicine views the process a bit differently, noting that the needles are inserted at specific nerve points. This stimulates the release of the body’s natural endorphins and hormones, resulting in better circulation, reduced pain, and increased healing. No matter which view you take, acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment for pets, and one that has helped many of our patients feel better.

Chiropractic Care

Chiropractic care isn’t always considered holistic, per se, but it is very much aligned with holistic treatments. Although it works with the bones and joints, the overall concept is similar to the purpose of acupuncture. It addresses the sort of kinks and blockages that interfere with the body’s nervous and musculoskeletal systems, and also realigns the spinal column. These things help with mobility, nerve function, hormone release and production, and circulation, therefore restoring the body’s ability to function as a whole, complete unit. Like any other holistic option, chiropractic treatments are safe, non-invasive, and don’t require surgery or anesthesia.

Home Care

While holistic veterinary care offers wonderful options, there are also ways to approach your pet’s home care from a holistic angle. Nutrition is one way to do that. Offer your pet wholesome, high-quality foods that contain healthy, natural ingredients. Your pet’s mental and emotional health also factor in. Keep your furry pal happy and active with walks, playtime, and cuddles. Kitties are natural zen masters, but Fluffy won’t mind some comfy beds. Fido may prefer walks in the park or outdoor play sessions. Providing your pet with clean, pure air and water is also important. Ask your vet for more information.
