Caring For An Anxious Dog

March 15, 2023
March 20th is Dogs In Yellow Day! This is an awareness day about anxiety in dogs. Fido can be upset by major changes, such as going to a new household, and is also vulnerable to fear, anxiety, depression, loneliness, and other emotions. Many of our canine pals are also easily stressed and frightened. If your pup is anxious, read on! A Plano, TX offers some advice on caring for a timid pooch below.

Exercise

Making sure that Fido is getting the right kind and amount of activity is important for many reasons. It’s great for him physically. It’s also very helpful on an emotional level. A vigorous walk or a fun play session can help your canine buddy work off that nervous energy much the way that a good workout does for us. Afterwards, your furry pal will be a bit tired, and, hopefully, a lot calmer.

Cuddles

While you don’t want to go overboard here and completely coddle your furry friend, there’s no reason not to show him lots of love and affection. There’s nothing wrong with soothing Fido if he seems scared or uneasy. Just don’t go overboard!

Calming Products

There are many different products on the market that can help soothe nervous dogs. These include things like calming shirts, puzzle toys, and pheromone products, such as sprays and treats. Ask your vet for recommendations on these. Be sure to follow directions to the letter!

Routine

Our canine companions often thrive when they are kept on a steady schedule for things like walks, meals, and playtime. Simply being in a stable, loving home can work wonders for a timid, scared pup! Spend some quality time with Fido every day, and make sure he knows that he is loved and safe.

Behavioral Therapy

Behavioral therapy can be very beneficial, in part because it focuses not on how we process information, but how Fido does. In some cases, a few months of therapy may make a world of difference. Just be realistic. A dog that is terrified of strangers is probably never going to transform into a super-friendly, outgoing pooch who loves everyone he meets. However, he can still make improvements, and should be able to function in society. Ask your vet for more information.    As your Plano, TX animal clinic, we are dedicated to providing great care. Please feel free to contact us anytime!
