Kitty Cooling Methods

Summer is on the way and temperatures are already rising. You’ll need to keep a close eye on your feline pal at this time of year. Hot weather is extremely dangerous for Fluffy! Kitties don’t have many options for cooling down once they’ve overheated, and can get into trouble very quickly. Here, a Plano, TX vet offers some advice on helping Fluffy beat the heat.

Water, Water, Water

The best way to keep your furry little friend comfy and purring in the heat is to keep her hydrated. Consider setting out some extra water stations. This will be particularly beneficial if you have a big house and/or more than one cat. If you let Fluffy go outside, have clean water available for her outdoors as well.

Keep Kitty In

Keep Fluffy inside, where she has access to rooms cooled by fans or air conditioners. (This is also safer: the Great Outdoors is a dangerous place for a curious little ball of fur.) If you do let your furball go out, have clean water available outdoors for her. You may want to set out extra water stations.

Beauty Sessions

Our feline friends are pretty good about keeping themselves clean. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t use some help. Brushing Fluffy will get that dirt and dead fur out of her coat, keeping her comfier and cooler.

Cool Bed

Speaking of cooling, make sure your furry pal has a comfortable spot to go relax in. You can look into getting a kitty cooling pad to put under her bed. Or, get into the habit of keeping towels in the freezer to put in her bed.

Cold Snacks

Your kitty may enjoy a cool treat. You can find cold snacks for cats, or make your own. It’s worth pointing out that, while our furry pals may like ice cream, ours isn’t safe for them. There’s some debate about whether or not Fluffy has a sweet tooth. Cats aren’t supposed to be able to taste sweet. However, it seems no one has told them that: some kitties love cake, donuts, ice cream, and other desserts. The most logical explanation here is that it’s the taste of fat our feline buddies actually like. Regardless, stick to safe, vet-approved options and ingredients.
