Summer is coming! This time of year can be rough on Fido, especially as he ages. You’ll want to take some steps to keep your pooch safe and comfortable in the heat. Read on as a Plano, TX vet offers tips on keeping your senior dog cool in summer.

Water

First and foremost, make sure Fido always has plenty of clean, fresh water. You may want to set out more than one water station. If you have a yard for your canine companion to play in, put water bowls outside as well.

Bed

Fido may appreciate having a comfy hammock bed for summer. These allow air to flow beneath them, so they stay cooler than regular beds. Pick something that is both comfortable for your pet and easy for him to get in and out of. You can also get Fido an orthopedic bed, and point a fan at it. Just make sure the fan won’t fall over on your pooch!

Exercise

Your canine pal will slow down as he ages, but he’ll still need regular activity. Keep Fido inside during the middle of the day as much as possible. Save longer walks for dusk and dawn, when it’s cooler out.

Paw Care

Have you ever walked barefoot on hot tar? Ouch! This is just as painful for Fido as it is for you. Use paw balm on your furry pal’s feet to protect them. (Tip: petroleum jelly will work in a pinch.)

Kiddie Pool

Many pooches love to splash in kiddie pools. Pick one up for Fido and let him cool off in on hot days.

Travel

Older dogs are much more sensitive to extreme temperatures than their younger counterparts. It can be very taxing for Fido to go from cool to hot environments and back. Senior pooches may also have a hard time getting in and out of the car. If you need to take your furry friend somewhere, keep the AC on in the car, and get doggy ramps to help him get in and out. Also, never leave your pet in a car unattended.

Cold Snacks
