Fido’s Fitness Regimen

September 1, 2019
Is your canine buddy getting enough exercise? Some dogs are naturally energetic, while others are basically furry couch potatoes. However, all of our four-legged friends need proper activity to stay healthy. Read on as a Frisco, TX vet offers tips on keeping your dog in shape.

Swimming

Swimming can be a great workout for both dogs and people. This isn’t right for every pooch, however. While some dogs, like Retrievers, are natural swimmers, others just are not well-suited for the water. For example, large breeds, brachycephalic pups, and many small dogs often don’t do well swimming. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Jogging

Many dogs actually enjoy running. You’ll need to build Fido’s endurance, so start slowly. At first, just alternate walking and running. Then, as your canine friend gets more fit, you can increase the time and distance he runs.

Playtime

Playing can actually be a fun workout for your pet. Games like Fetch or Tag keep your pooch both active and entertained. If your furry pal has more energy than you do, stand on a hill or slope and toss his ball or toy downhill. Fido will get twice the workout if he has to run uphill to return to you. Chasing the dot from a laser pointer can also give your pooch a good workout.

Walks

Many of our canine companions stay in shape just through those daily walks. This is also a great way to spend some quality time with your dog! Make those strolls a bit more challenging by changing your pace and alternating walking fast and slow.

Automated Toys

Your furry friend may be able to work out on his own with the help of some modern gadgets. Mechanical ball launchers, for example, can keep your pup chasing after tennis balls. You can also get your pooch an automated laser pointer.

Tips

All of our canine pals are different, and they all have their own unique workout needs. Some dogs, such as small dogs and senior pups, may only need a short walk. Other pooches may need an hour or more of vigorous exercise a day. It’s also important to make sure you aren’t overexerting your pet. If Fido is panting heavily or seems tired, give him some water and let him rest. Do you have questions about your dog’s exercise needs? Please reach out to us, your Frisco, TX vet clinic, anytime.
