Things You Can Make for Fido

Are your children spending a lot of time at home this summer? If so, you may find your canine buddy is more than happy to have his little humans around more. Actually, dogs can be quite useful here. Read on as a Plano, TX vet lists some things the kids can make for Fido below.

Rope Toy

Rope toys are very easy to make! Take a towel or tee shirt and cut it into strips. Next, braid those strips together. Braid the braids together, and keep going until it’s the size you want. You can string a tennis ball or some dried sweet potato slices through it if you like. Just tie it off with a big knot at the end when you are done.

Snacks!

One thing that is bound to get that tail wagging is a yummy snack. Have the kids make some ‘pupsicles’ for their canine friend! Put kibble, broken dog treats, or cooked, plain meat or poultry in an ice cube tray or a cute freezable mold. Pour water or sodium-free broth over the mix, and freeze overnight. There are also lots of recipes online for doggy treats. Here’s an easy one: combine pureed pumpkin with some natural peanut butter, an egg, and some whole wheat flour. Divide into individual portions. You can use a cute bone-shaped cookie cutter if you like. Bake at 350 for about 20-25 minutes. Just don’t give your furry pal more than a few at a time.

Bed

If there’s one thing our canine companions love, it’s comfy beds. If you have a small dog, you can upcycle an end table, dresser drawer, or suitcase. For larger dogs, upcycle a tire or turn a table upside down. Add paint or varnish to make it look nice, and put soft bedding inside it.

Painted Jar

Fido may not be impressed by this one, but it’s a good way to keep the kids entertained for a bit. Get an old cookie jar, and let your kids paint it. You can also get a crate for your pooch to use as a toybox, and let the kids paint or decorate that. Or, if your furry buddy has a doghouse, have them make a sign for it.
