Holidays With Kittens

December 15, 2020
The holidays are almost upon us! If a kitten has just joined your household, you’re certainly in for an extra special holiday this year. Kittens are always adorable, but they somehow manage to get even cuter at this time of year. They also have a knack for getting into mischief! Read on as a veterinarian in Plano, TX offers some tips on getting through little Fluffy’s first holiday season.

Gifts

You’ll need to pick up a few things for your kitten’s stocking. Toys are at the top of little Fluffy’s wish list. Get your adorable ball of mischief a variety of fun playthings, and pay attention to what she likes best. Your furry friend will also appreciate things like soft beds, cat furniture, boxes, and treats.

Hazards

Kittens are very playful and curious, and they usually want to investigate, well, everything. They’re also very focused on sorting out how all those claws and teeth work, and will pretty much attack anything in sight. This can be quite dangerous! Be aware of the hazards that can endanger your frisky furball. Anything with ropes or strings is a choking and strangling concern. This includes ribbons, lights, tinsel, and garlands. You’ll also need to put wand toys away after use. Other safety hazards include fallen needles, sharp ornaments, ornament hooks, candles, fireplaces, and holiday plants, such as yew, ivy, and mistletoe.

Guests

If you’re having company over, ask everyone to gently pet and play with your kitten. This is great for socialization! However, you’ll need to keep a very close eye on little Fluffy. Kittens are quite tiny, so it’s easy for them to be overlooked. Right now, your furry pal won’t make a very noticeable lump beneath a blanket, and she can easily fit beneath a recliner or rocking chair. If you’re having a house full of guests, put your little furball in a quiet room with food, toys, treats, bedding, and a litterbox, and let her relax.

Photos

Don’t forget to take some photos of your little furball! Baby cats grow very fast! Have some fun with this: snap your kitten’s photo with a tree or presents in the background. Just make sure little Fluffy doesn’t try to eat her props! All of us here at Coit Hedgcoxe Animal Hospital, your veterinary clinic of Plano, TX, wish you a safe and happy holiday season.
