National Puppy Day

March 15, 2017
Did you know that National Puppy Day is coming up March 23rd? Puppies are, of course, one of the cutest things on the planet, and are definitely something to celebrate. If you have a puppy, you can certainly look forward to some adorable antics from your pet in the next few months! Read on as a Plano, TX vet offers some tips on little Fido’s care.

Socialization

Socialization is very important to little Fido’s growth and development. You’ll need to introduce your furry friend to lots of friendly people and well-behaved dogs while he’s young. This will help him form an open mind. There is a tight window for socializing puppies, so don’t delay! Ask your vet for more information.

Puppyproofing

Baby dogs are usually very interested in figuring out what is and isn’t edible. And, once the pain of teething starts, your puppy will also be looking for things to chew on. To keep the little guy safe, you’ll need to do some puppyproofing. Toxic plants; plastic bags and ties; wires and cords; chemicals; medicines; and small or sharp objects should all be kept well out of paws’ reach. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Training

Little Fido has a lot to learn about the do’s and don’ts of being a good dog. Training should start immediately. Housebreaking and crate training work very well together. While Fido is working on these, start teaching him basic doggy commands, like Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down.

Veterinary Care

Puppies need to visit their veterinarians a few times during that crucial first year. Your furry bundle of cute will need to be microchipped and spayed or neutered. Little Fido will also need his initial exams and vaccinations. Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. You’ll also want to get tips your canine pal’s food, training, and care needs.

Play Time

Now for the fun part! Take time to play with little Fido every day. This will help strengthen the bond between you. Those fun (and super cute) play sessions will also help your canine buddy burn off any excess energy, so he’ll be calmer and better behaved afterwards. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures: your pet’s adorable toddler phase won’t last long! Do you have questions about your dog’s health or care? Contact us today!
